350 Event - 10/10/10

Picture
350 is the most important number in the world—it's what scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Three years ago, after leading climatologists observed rapid ice melt in the Arctic and other frightening signs of climate change, they issued a series of studies showing that the planet faced both human and natural disaster if atmospheric concentrations of CO2 remained above 350 parts per million.  Currently, there are about 390 parts per million of CO2 in our atmosphere.  By raising awareness about 350 on 10/10/10, we are trying to get our world's politicians to pay attention and get policies in order to address this issue.

As the Roots and Shoots Club at High Tech High International, on 10/10/10, we embarked on a bike ride to raise awareness about reducing emissions. We began the bike ride at 10:10AM and rode from HTHI to Balboa Park.  We were also armed with seed bombs to plant seeds in places that need a little more nature along the way. At our destination, we held an interactive event for the public to help raise awareness and unify the club as a whole.

"Let's Talk Trash" Green Week

Picture
Green Week was a week during the school year with the purpose of getting people who don't normally think about "being green" to do so.  The week consisted of a new activity each day to learn how to be sustainable at home, at work and at school.  We were aiming to get students, directors, teachers and everyone to participate in these activities.  Some of these acitivities included a "flash mob," "Wear Green Day," "Off the Grid," community meeting/school assembly, Crucial Element (environmentally-conscious dance crew).

Going Off the Grid

Picture
The idea of going "Off the Grid" is to live the effects of drastic sustainable change in one day.  However, we know that slow progressive change is more effective in getting people to buy into the change.  So, by introducing drastic change on one day, we're hoping to inspire people to incorporate gradual change into their own lives.  Through this single event, we hoped to allow people to observe how reducing our resources can lead to long-term sustainable change.  We wanted people to recognize how much electricity or energy we use each day and this day was aimed at helping people to realize how much we depend on these resources.

Spreading the Green Love

Picture
Spreading the Green Love includes posters, awareness activities and other small events that the HTHI Roots & Shoots has been a part of.  Through these activities, we want people to realize how much we affect the environment and how we need to preserve it.  To spread the Green Love, we've created posters with "green" slogans or tips/facts to post up around the school close to heavily frequented areas.
